Better Than Ezra bassist Tom Drummond and I started a side project a few years ago and have written somewhere close to 15 hybrid rock/electronica songs since. This song is one of my favorites and will eventually wind it's way onto the record Tom and I are destined to finish one of these days. I don't know what it's about. Tom loved the idea of "11:11" winding it's way into a lyric somehow. We built the idea around that and the giant studio upright piano. If you listen you can hear the creaking of the piano bench, it's pedals and some Cajun ghosts shaking their chains."

This was the toughest so far as we had house guests all week and I couldn't work late. Knowing this I dusted off an old unfinished Getaway Car song we recorded with producer Jeff Juliano for the 2004 All Your Little Pieces record. I stripped it of everything but the original bass and drums and rebuilt it from the ground up. Luckily I sang through it a few times before I came down with what might be the Piglet Flu. I soldiered on and finished it despite the chills and snot. This month has been full of songs that got all emotional so here's a straight up rock song about asking a buddy to self destruct with you. Dan Garvin played drums. Chris Reardon played bass and Jared Bartlett played guitar. Micah Wilshire mixed. Do you wanna hit bottom with your best friend? Where's the Dayquil?" - Todd Wright

What's it all about? "Alien Love Song started as an "I'm gonna try to write a hit" moment. I thought if I was going to write an obvious love song I should make it about something unique. That way I could have a hearty laugh when Faith Hill recorded it and had no idea it was really about an astronaut falling in love with an interplanetary space beast. Some time later my friend Yvonne was in the last weekend of a brave fight with cancer and I was called to the hospital to come say goodbye. Her family asked if I would sing to her. They borrowed a guitar from a very sweet woman who routinely came around and sang to the terminally ill patients. I didn't know what to sing. I had never written anything that even remotely touched on this kind of farewell. I played Alien Love Song and in that moment the song, for me, was changed forever. I avoided recording it for a good long while. With the help of some amazing friends: Matt McGinn (co-produced), Rico Allen (drums) Mark Williams (guitar) and Micah Wilshire (mixed) I have finally put it out there. I could not be happier with the result. This song is, always was and always will be for Yvonne Haga...and a special tip of the hat to Will Foreman as well. Faith Hill never did record it by the way.
